Desi bird farming constitutes an important economic activity for the upliftment of rural people of India. It is an important source of supplementary income and nutritional security for a large number of poor households across the country. In India, backyard poultry suffers from various systems constraints; like non-availability of quality chicks, drop in egg production due to inbreeding and higher disease incidence (due to non-vaccination). The average egg production of desi-bird which was 60 earlier, has come down to 45-55 per annum, which reduces the income considerably. In order to improve the rural people income, the rearing of improved varieties of desi birds in terms of egg production and weight gain can be a viable alternative venture. To fulfill the purpose, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Namakkal has introduced the CARI Nirbheek (ASEEL CROSSDeveloped at CARI, lzatnagar) crossbred desi bird in the district. CARI Nirbheek is a cross of Indian native breed Aseel with CARI Red and therefore commonly called as Aseel cross birds. They are dual purpose birds used for egg and meat purpose and have found wider acceptance and greater adoptability to local condition. Malik and Singh (2010) reported the annual egg production of CARI Nirbheek birds was 161.53 eggs, and the body weight at 20 weeks of age were 1.801± 0.019, 1.414±0.017 kg for males and females, respectively reared under farm condition, whereas 1.642±0.061, 1.346±0.029 kg for males and females, respectively those reared under field condition of Tripura state. Alam et al. (2011) stated that, the body weight of CARI Nirbheek bird at 5 months age was 1500 g for males and the annual egg production under farmer's field condition were 156 eggs. Meena et al. (2012) reported that, the annual egg production of CARI Nirbheek was 140 nos. in the farmer's field of Rajasthan state and at 20 weeks of age the body weight were 1430 g for male birds and 910 g for female birds. Keeping the above performance of Aseel cross birds in the field condition, a research trial was conducted in the organized farm condition (Intensive) and in the farmer field (Semi-Intensive) with the following objectives. (I) To evaluate and analyse the performance of CARI Nirbheek with reference to weight gain and egg production at different age of growth, under intensive and semi intensive farming systems at Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. (II) To calculate the income received from sale of egg and meat and to find out the profit margin, benefit to cost ratio of rearing Aseel cross birds.
